$179 GST/HST Credit Coming in July 2025

The goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit is a tax-free quarterly payment that helps individuals and families with low and modest incomes offset the GST or HST that they pay. It may also include payments from provincial and territorial programs. The GST/HST credit payments are managed by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The payment is intended to help individuals reduce their financial burden and live a respectable life.

The main objective of the payment is to provide financial assistance to those individuals and households that are facing financial hardships. This payment is to help them offset the GST and GST expenses. The next payment is coming in July 2025. With the help of this payment, eligible individuals can also afford basic expenses, such as groceries, rent, energy, and medical bills. The CRA recalculated credit amounts annually, factoring in adjusted family net income and changes to family circumstances.

These Canadians Will Get Paid in First Batch

Only eligible Canadians will get paid in the first batch of the credit. To be eligible, the individual needs to meet the eligibility criteria as follows:

Citizenship or Residency: To be eligible, the individual must be a citizen or a permanent resident of Canada (for income tax purposes: the month before the CRA makes a payment and at the beginning of the month the CRA makes a payment).

Age Requirement: The individual must be at least 19 years old to receive this credit. If the individual is under the age of 19, they must meet at least one of the following conditions during the same period:

  • they have (or had) a spouse or common-law partner
  • you are (or were) a parent and live (or lived) with your child

Tax Filing: It is compulsory to file your income tax return to get this payment. The individual must have filed their 2023 income tax return. It is suggested to file your income tax return even if you have no income to get the benefits of government grants.

Income Threshold: The size of your credit and qualification are based on your Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI). For 2025, the CRA has adjusted these for inflation:

  • Minimum where credit begins for a single person: $11,337
  • Starting level of credit: $45,521

If your AFNI is more than $45,521, your GST/HST credit reduces progressively and ceases after a specific limit.

Payment Dates

The Canada Revenue Agency usually sends the GST/HST credit payments on the fifth day of July, October, January, and April. If you do not receive your GST/HST credit payment on the expected payment date, please wait 10 working days before you contact CRA.

How is the GST/HST Credit Calculated?

GST/HST credit payments are calculated using your tax return from the previous year. For instance, you will receive your first payment in July 2025, which marks the beginning of the 2024 payment period, if your 2023 tax return qualifies you for the credit.

The amount of your GST/HST credit payments is determined by your family’s net income and the number of children you have registered for the credit.

These circumstances may cause a recalculation:

  • your family’s net income changes due to a reassessment
  • your eligible child turns 19 years of age
  • your marital status changes
  • the number of eligible children in your care changes
  • a recipient dies
  • you start or stop sharing custody of a child
